What is author branding (and why does it matter)?
30 September 2026

Let’s start at the beginning: what is branding?
Branding is the process of shaping a unique identity and reputation so people can recognise, trust and remember you. Think of your favourite big brand. You’d probably spot their colours, font or logo instantly, even as a tiny mark in the corner of a billboard. That’s branding at work.
Now put that together with “author”. Author branding is your visual identity as an (you guessed it) author: your colours, typography and logo, all working together to feel like you. When used consistently across your marketing, it means readers can recognise you at a glance, whether they’re scrolling their feed or walking past your table at an event. See the end for my author branding case study!
Why recognition matters
Authors should treat book selling like a business, and in business, recognition builds trust. A polished brand signals a professional author, and that helps turn occasional readers into fans who come back for your next release.
It gives you time back to write
You became an author because you love writing, so anything that gives you more time for it is a win. A consistent brand means you’re not reinventing the wheel every time you post or bouncing between different Canva templates. With one visual identity, posts are quick to recreate and always look cohesive. (A little self-promo: Hot Off the Shelf creates reusable social media templates so you can skip the Canva faff and post without the stress).
A quick review from an author:
Claudia has developed a brand for my author business which has elevated the quality of my social media posts and making everything look more professional.
It makes your event table unmissable
One of my biggest takeaways from working with clients, on author branding, is the difference branding makes at in-person events. Matching banners, price lists and bookmarks make your table the one people can’t walk past, and that professionalism draws people in to pick up your books.
And it keeps working after the event
When your socials match your table, anyone who remembers you can find you and instantly know they’re in the right place. Your brand becomes the link between a passing chat and a new follower, and often a new reader.
Signs your author brand needs a refresh
Okay, so you’ve made it this far and you might be thinking, “um, maybe I need a brand refresh?” Here are some signs your author brand needs a refresh (or that it’s time to create one):
-
Mismatched posts on your profile. If you have lots of books and series, your feed will naturally look a bit mixed, so that’s not the real giveaway. I’m talking about your author posts: event and signing announcements, author updates and personal posts. If those don’t look like they come from the same person, it’s time.
-
A bare-looking event table. Everything on your table should share the same colours and typography to give it that cohesive feel. If your banner, price list and bookmarks look like strangers, people will walk straight past.
-
Starting every social post from scratch. If you open a blank Canva page each time you post, you need an author branding template sorted!
-
Marketing platforms that don’t match. If your website, social media and newsletter all look like they belong to different authors, readers can’t connect the dots.
If you nodded along to more than one of these, it might be time for a refresh.

Author Branding Case Study:
Victoria Walker was in a bit of a tricky spot. She had two different book series and a standalone, and everything on her socials looked mismatched. So, we created an author brand together, starting with her event table.
She wanted something that said romance author, but that didn’t copy her book covers while still feeling like her. Here’s what I came up with: a bright, gorgeous colour palette with a nod to contemporary romance, a fun, romantic font (literally with hearts over some of the letters), and a signature that she could use as a logo across everything. As you can see, the branding looks gorgeous across her table (if I don’t say so myself), with every element consistent. Take a sneak peek at her merchandise too, which follows the same branding but still looks like cute merch, I’m quire obsessed with this!
Next, we built templates and a brand kit in Canva so Victoria could create her own posts while keeping the vibe of her brand across all her socials. She’s used it for announcement posts and for answering prompts on socials, which is a great way to keep the branding visible. You can also see the branding on her website, which really helps build that brand recognition. Here are some pics you can check out and if you are into Icelandic romance or small town romance, check out her website.
